Clearing smoke
I got on a plane the day after I got the news about my dad. Got home this past Sunday and saw my dad last Saturday. Emotional roller coaster doesn't really cut it. Emotional typhoon is more appropriate. I stayed with my sister and brother in law for the majority of the time I was there. Cleaned out my storage unit, which was a cathartic yet therapeutic coping mechanism while we still awaited news of my dad. Turns out he was discharged that day and my parents settled back home last Friday. We drove up that day and stayed the night, visited the next day.
Surprisingly, my dad remembers a good bit of the actual day it happened. He wrote down what he could remember and shared it with us. He struggled with reading as fast as he usually does and there were some words misspelled, but all things considering it wasn't bad at all. He still wasn't able to see fully out of his right eye. Today though is totally different. I called my folks on the way home today; they were on their way home from golfing. Who would have thunk it, 10 days post stroke and golfing. They determined it was a blood clot that caused the stroke, so now that we know that now it's figuring out what caused that.
I'm personally amazed. Amazed at how the human body just fixes itself and sorts itself out sometimes. I'm amazed at my dad's amazing spirit and resilience in persevering through all of this. He sounded like his usual self today, even on Saturday he sounded like his usual self. Maybe a little less so on Saturday than today. As for me, I'm okay. The initial shock of it all has sort of settled now that I know he's ok. Really ok. I've been talking to people at work about it, including a few of the doctors I've worked with. Talking about it, though it's still difficult to say, has been helpful. I'm glad the worst of this is over and now we're on the road to recovery, all of us.
Now maybe we'll hear something soon about this dang election!!!!!!!
