The things one cannot make up
Sometimes there are good days.
Sometimes there are bad days.
Sometimes there are REALLY bad days.
Sometimes there are those days you don't ever want to forget.
Sometimes there are those days in where 3:00 can't get here fast enough.
Sometimes you get patients who come back that you don't mind who come back.
Sometimes you get patients who come back and you throw up in your mouth a little.
And then sometimes you get patients who come back because they misplaced their favorite nail clippers, so they call and ask for you by name (because you're a victim of circumstance) and you tear the unit apart and you can't find the beloved nail clippers.
Uh....hi? Please go away and I'll send you some new ones, because that's just weird. Ok? Or is that just me?
And then sometimes you get those patients who say the strangest things, and in your mind you're saying What....The....F&%$#?!?!?!
And then on the flipside, sometimes you hear the most hilarious things.
"Today is like everyone is on their period and there's only one tampon."
Those were just some hospital highlights over the last little while. Meanwhile, at the nursing home, I almost had to break up an LOL (little old lady) fight over a bag of gummy worms. "Hey, come on, she said they're hers. Can you just give her back the gummy worms?"
And then I helped wrap someone's Christmas presents. Oh, you can't make this stuff up. Can't at all. It's part of why I love my job so much. And it's nice being able to come home and have someone to share that with, because let's face it, we get it. When I used to live with my sister, I would tell her work happenings all the time, but she didn't truly understand what goes on day after day. And God love her for putting up with me after all these years. So as I sit here with my heating pack on my throbbing foot (yes, the same one that has been plaguing me for years), I find myself asking myself the same question I've asked myself probably more than a hundred times since I became a nurse.
How did I get here?
Christmas is less than a week away. Another year wraps up in about 2 weeks. Today I opened my memories on Facebook and the first one to greet me was something I posted a year ago to the day about accepting my travel nurse position at the hospital I still work at. My oh my, how much things have changed since then. In a good way, though....in more good ways than I could even begin to imagine!
