Putting politics aside
CW: Sexual assault, rape, bullying, suicide
Maybe it's because that I'm a nurse and my way of viewing the world is a little different. But in the midst of all of these allegations surrounding Kavanaugh, there's one question that has been burning in my mind since all of this started. Put politics aside for one minute and ask yourself this:
If one of your family members or friends came forward to you and told you they were sexually assaulted and/or raped, regardless of how long ago it was, would you believe them? I would too.
There are a few disturbing trends I've noticed in the midst of all these allegations that seem to scatter the news daily; there seems to be a lot of blaming, pointing fingers and to be honest, just some really nasty opinions. And yes, I know we are entitled to our opinions, but people, these are HUMAN BEINGS. They have feelings, lives, families, friends, jobs that are probably being ruined, and yes, I am considering both sides, both for the accusers and the accused. But nobody thinks about that, and it's all about those filthy democrats or the stiff republicans. Typical. And in the midst, my mind linked another scenario to these allegations; bullying. I am not a victim of sexual assault, but I was a victim of bullying in high school, and I've noticed that even still today there are these disturbing patterns of almost seemingly support for the bullies. Now what do I mean by that? So we've all heard it before if we've been bullied; "just ignore it," "stand up for yourself," "go tell someone." Yet it's the bullied that are forced to change schools, spend hours being counseled by the school counselors or principal and the ones that are dying, LITERALLY. 9, 10, 11 year old children, CHILDREN, KILLING themselves. It doesn't matter whether or not you believe, but when people are literally killing themselves because of being assaulted and bullied, you can't make that up. That's REAL. Do you see the disturbances in my point now? I thought you would.
"But they're such a good boy (or girl). They would never do that to another person!"
"They have a reputation to maintain. We'll sweep this under the rug for now."
You can't deny that there is a culture towards protecting the accusers. Cannot deny it. So then we see perhaps a few months of prison, a slap on the wrist, maybe some community service? Meanwhile, some of these victims are traumatized for the rest of their lives, plagued with nightmares, illness and crippling fear? And I'm telling you, some of the patients I've worked with have been survivors; there's a fear in their eyes when they're sharing their stories with you that you will never forget, and it takes a fierce amount of courage! Like I said, I'm not a victim of sexual assault, but I'm a rather empathetic person; you can almost see the weight being lifted off their shoulders. You can see the healing starting to begin. So what is my point to all of this? Maybe there isn't one. Maybe I just needed to get everything out there. But something has to be done. I don't know what though. I just know that if your family member or friend that told something very personal to you was made out to be a liar by the rest of the world, I know that you would move Heaven and Earth to protect them. Bet nobody thought about that either, did they?
