It's big, y'all
I've been in Iowa City since Sunday, and so far I'm enjoying the experience! I did the 8 and a half hour drive in two days, stopping in Indiana on Saturday to stay with some friends. I arrived on Sunday, after a time change (to central time), wind mills, farms, flat roads, farms, more windmills and farms. Oh, did I say farms? FARMS. EVERYWHERE. The windmills were pretty cool to see though; if you're driving through Illinois (the rural parts), that's where you'll likely find them. Monday started orientation, and at the end of the day we did a tour of the hospital. I haven't fact checked it yet, but us new travel nurses (there's 6 of us) were told that to walk from one end of the hospital to the other is approximately 1/3 of a mile. I may actually fact check this one day...
I've lived in Kentucky since 2008 and am very familiar with UK's medical center and all that's going on there. Until I came to Iowa, I thought UK was a big hospital. I have to say, this one...is much bigger. In order to even get to the hospital, you have to park in a parking lot about 2(ish) miles away from the hospital and wait for a bus to pick you up. Ride the bus for 10 minutes, get off then freaking walk about another 5-10 minutes, depending on what part of the hospital you're living at for the day. I lucked out though in my living situations; I'm staying in an apartment in which the complex is typically for students or faculty of the affiliated university. But I'm here on a sublease until my contract finishes in January. Anyway, the parking lot where the bus picks the staff up is literally...a 3 minute drive from my apartment, so yeah, I lucked out there! Maybe if I'm feeling super ambitious I'll walk....maybe not.
So that's what's going on here so far! Still have 3 more days of orientation and may find out something relative to a schedule here soon. Right now it's rainy and yucky here so I may snuggle up with a book, movie or whatever. Thank you all for praying, encouraging me and walking alongside me on this journey. It's so freaking awesome, and I'm really blessed!
