The traveling actor missionary
Just now, I got off the phone with my recruiter to which she responded happily "HI KELLY!" I know that's one of the reasons I have stayed in this industry for so long; my recruiter is the freaking best! Quick shout out to Simone, you rock!
I was thinking about being a travel nurse and what it really entails, and I came to the conclusion that being a travel nurse is like being an actor....well, actress in my case. I have someone available by phone (much like actors/actresses have agents) to give me potential "gigs" (contracts), I have to learn new charting systems and meet new people (compared to learning lines and working with other actors) and learn a new area. I can sign on for more time (extend) or terminate it when I'm ready. Yeah, and you all are probably thinking "well she doesn't have any time on her hands." This is what happens when you live by yourself and are left to your own devices. Ha.
In light of recent events, having just returned from my 4th mission trip, I also compared being a travel nurse to being like a missionary. I'm away from home, meeting new people, learning a new area and culture while all the while trying to show the love of Jesus to everyone I meet. It's hard sometimes, I've been homesick and have felt lonely and have questioned God as to whether or not this is really the path He has me destined on. I've had my moments where I've felt it's not worth it anymore and how easy it would be to just pack up and move back home, but more often I've had my moments where I know without a doubt that this is what I am supposed to do, at least for now. But I love what I do, and I plan on doing so until God calls me to do something else. We shall see.
