Venturing onward
In the midst of having a patient walk away from me while literally preparing their meds in front of them because I was "taking too long" and an AMA discharge asking if we'll call them a taxi cab home...among other omnishambles, I've barely had any time to really think about and share the next steps I'm taking in my career.
Drum roll please....PMHN!!!
Now those on the outside are probably wondering why in the world I'm excited about a bunch of letters? I'm in the process of studying for my Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse certification. A certification is a nationally recognized credential that basically says I am legit in my field of experience. It's supposedly a great resume builder and marketing tool, or so I've been told. I applied last week, having first had to complete the 30 hour continuing education requirements before submitting my application. By the NEXT DAY, I received my authorization to test. I have from now until the end of September to sit for my exam. My test is scheduled for August 10. Yes, it is an NCLEX-like style of exam, in which I'll be sitting in front of a computer answering 175 questions thrown at me, all in regards to psych nursing. So perhaps I'm slightly masochistic in regards to putting myself through another standardized test; something I promised I would never do again, but alas, here I am, studying away. I've already started studying, and let's just say it's a good thing I paid attention in my Gen. Psych class! It's been a really great refresher so far, and I'm eager for the opportunities having this certification is going to potentially open. Wish me luck!
