Some nurse q&a that looked interesting
Found this online and figured it would be fun. Plus, I'm kind of bored and just killing some time. (Look up My Day Was Worse Than Yours for some great nursing fun, which is where I found this questionnaire).
1. Tell me about a patient you'll never forget.
The patient I cared for on my last day as a nursing student. They unfortunately passed away, but it was peaceful and their family was by their side. It was the weekend before my 23rd birthday, and also the same day my Grandpa passed away.
2. Why did you decide to become a nurse?
You know, I just recently had a conversation about this with my parents. I honestly can't pinpoint an "aha!" moment or anything of the such that led me to my now career choice. All I really knew was that I wanted to do something that involved helping others, and I believe it was around the 8th grade where I decided I wanted to become a nurse. Boring, I know.
3. What would you do if you weren't a nurse?
Probably write. I like writing and loved it as a child/teenager. I had quite the knack for poetry. Or travel professionally, if such a career existed.
4. What's your favorite part about being a nurse?
Seeing my patients progress and actually get better. There's really no greater feeling.
5. What's your least favorite part about being a nurse?
A chaotic milieu or a unit of very angry patients. I know they can't help it but it still makes for a very long and challenging day.
6. What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now?
Maybe still traveling. I think eventually though I'd love to settle down again and work in a long-term drug rehab facility. Who knows? I change my mind probably every day.
7. When you got your first job out of nursing school what was the best part?
No more journals, no more care plans!!!! Plus, it was a job I really wanted and was very persistent in pursuing! I even remember what I was doing when I got the call saying I got the job.
8. What was the worst part about your first job?
Getting over that "new nurse" fear, which was succeeded by a new nurse cockiness. That changed when I made my first med error. As scary as that was, it was a very humbling experience.
9. Tell me about a challenging patient.
I can't. I've worked in mental health for my entire career. I have way too many. The field of mental health in and of itself is a challenge all on its own. It takes a special attitude and charisma to handle that population. Sometimes I don't feel cut out for it, but I can't imagine working in any other line of nursing.
10. What's the nicest thing a patient has ever said to you?
"Out of everyone here, you are the one who treats me the best. You actually listen to me." That happened not too long ago. There are others, but that's one that sticks.
11. What's the funniest thing a patient has ever said?
More ironic than funny, but a patient got really pissed at me because I wouldn't let them smoke, but they demanded I take them upstairs to another unit in the hospital so they could have a cigarette before they got admitted to the different unit (I worked in a non-smoking facility). It's always funny when your patients try to bargain with you...and sadly it never works.
12. What's the grossest thing you've had to do as a nurse?
I accidentally reached (bare handed) into a patient's cup of "goo" (their phlegm) while helping clean up their room. Secondly was mopping up a long line of poop, and yes, it was a VERY long line (and they say nothing ever happens on night shift!!!!)
13. What's your biggest pet peeve?
When staff aren't team players. It's called a healthcare team for a reason!
14. What's something you're really proud of?
That I'm still a nurse! There were so many times where I wanted to quit or almost flunked out of nursing school. It is TOUGH, but I thank God I made it through and am still doing what I love.
15. What's one thing you've had to do you never thought you would have to do in nursing school?
Oh man....wow. That's a really good but tough question. I'll come back to this when I've had more time to think about it!
That's all folks!
