WE DO NOT NEGOTIATE!
I often find myself asking the same question; why me? Why am I the one to never get cut when it's down to other employees or me? Why am I the one that gets pulled around from unit to unit while others get to stay? It's always me....why is it always me?
The answer; because I'll do it.
I may not like it. I may complain a bit. I usually have to deal with a ridiculous amount of drama, negativity, micromanaging staff or a high acuity. But I'll do it. Where my name is on the schedule, I'll go. There are some employees I know, from where I work now, and from my previous jobs before I went into nursing, who knew exactly what to say to get out of situations they didn't want to be in. I've been basically outranked by a PRN nurse when I got asked to cover one day, and the PRN said they wouldn't help out if they were placed on a certain unit. Guess who got placed on the "certain unit?" Me.
And this kind of thing happens all the time, and everywhere! How many times have you heard a friend, family member or co worker say "well if x happens or if this happens, I'll walk out" or "I'll just quit." Ok then...do it. That's not me at all. I don't negotiate or try to worm my way out of a situation just because I don't like it. Yeah I guess that may make me a push over, but it's not really being a push over to me, it's doing your job. Sometimes we have to get dealt the dirty hand. I had a lengthy discussion with another co worker about this a while ago and we found ourselves in very similar situations. It was frustrating for the both of us, but we came to the consensus that we would not stoop to some of the words that other employees have said. It's not in our nature; it's not in my nature to do so. It's just how the world works sometimes; sometimes life just ain't fair!
To be honest I don't know why I'm writing this today. It's been on my mind for a while now. I love my job, obviously. And I love my co workers to death. But this is the world we live in today, and unfortunately I've witnessed first hand grown adults basically act like children when they don't get their way....and it's typically not in work. It's in the every day world around me. It seems like we're raising generations of just a bunch of cry babies. There's no backbone anymore! What ever happened to being team players? Not anymore; now it's everyone fends for themselves and your competitors get left in the dust. Thank GOD I do not see this at work; despite a very hectic and demanding job and fast pace, we are all a team! We get our work done, we get along well with each other, but most importantly we lift each other up and we have some fun too. That's how it should be. It's something I try to aim for every time; no matter where I end up that particular day, always do what you can to help everyone else out. Common sense 101 if you ask me.
