Big Kids

Even though Halloween is tomorrow, we celebrated it at work today! I'm still in my Hobbit costume, waiting for my sister to come home to snap a pic of it for me so wondering minds can know what it looks like. My Hobbit feet were a huge hit; naturally, some people didn't know what they were. I had quite a few people wonder "what the heck is on your feet?" Some people figured it out, so it worked out. Then a co worker and I got into some fake mustaches....which was pretty fun.
Any gents out there? We're both still on the market!

These past few days haven't been bad....but the bunch we've got now have been a bit exhausting. It's like dealing with a bunch of big kids, seriously. And I raked in almost 40 hours last week just picking up extra, which was pretty exhausting. This weekend is my next weekend off until the end of next month (hooray for on-call!!!) So I am looking forward to some days off and I'm doing a fat load of nothing! Today was a great day; it was a bit chilly and I was a bit sleepy but it was still a good day. Second shift had just walked in and went into report when I answered the phone; it was a phone call from a former patient who had just left....like last week. Anyway, they said they were doing well and were going to some AA/NA meetings in their hometown but really just wasn't feeling them. They said most of the people there were old friends who were there basically because they had to be and were kind of stinking up the atmosphere....or something like that. So they went to a program called Celebrate Recovery, which takes the 12 Steps and makes them very Christ centered and faith centered. If you read the 12 steps, the emphasis is on surrendering to alcoholism or one's addiction to God or a Higher Power. It doesn't have to have the label "God" on it; I had one former patient who said their Higher Power was nature and just being outside. See what I mean? Anyway, CR focuses very much on Jesus being the Higher Power. Naturally, makes sense, right? So they went to this CR meeting I guess last night and they really enjoyed it, to which I was pleased to hear. They then said that after being "on the fence with God," that they gave their life over to Him last night and got a sponsor in the process!

One of the things we say all the time is "it works if you work it." It really just amazes me what some of these folks have gone through and are going through to get where they are. Even some of my co workers who have been on the same boat as the patients I work with. You never know what you learn from "those type of people" as I've heard them called in the past, but you have to be willing to be open to a lot of different things. This past weekend I was having a conversation and a patient said that if they had a family and children they would never....insert drug of choice here. And I said....you know, nobody is immune to the disease that is addiction. You just never know what people are going through. But some of my patients have been the most Christ-like, loving, caring and honest people I have ever met in my life, and they are the very reason I do what I do. And I would never in a million years have it any other way. I am so, so blessed to be where I am.

What I ran around in all day. Minus my fluffy fur monster :)
