#thisisnotacostume: a response to the Kelley Johnson scrutiny

Dear The View producers, hosts or whoever needs to read this:

SHAME. That is all I have to say. Shame on you and your ignorance. Once again, the media has given nurses a bad rep, and it has GOT. TO. STOP. Just because you say something on TV or if you have an opinion about something or a profession doesn't necessarily mean you should say it. I don't have much to add to what the thousands of rightfully angry nurses have already said, but I will add this; please educate yourselves. Please. Please take the time to get to know some of these nurses that you have so ignorantly slandered against. If you don't want to take the time to do that, allow me.

I have been a nurse for only two years. My career started in adult mental health; folks were depressed, psychotic, suicidal, and schizophrenic. Many were identified as the black sheep in their families and received countless scrutiny for their illnesses. I also worked on second shift; the busiest shift in the facility where I work. Some nights I'd be juggling 3 or 4 admissions while trying to get one patient from trying to not hurt themselves and trying to break up a fight with two other patients. Now I work with recovering addicts, and I love what I do. To be with someone at their most vulnerable state is not only scary but greatly rewarding, because in that moment I am the one they have trusted. And the sad thing is, none of you have any idea what is like, because you've decided to base your opinion on one profession from just a few minutes of a very thoughtful and heartfelt monologue. While your comment was made to millions of viewers nationwide, there were nurses all over the country running in a busy emergency room saving someone's life. Another was crying with a family members because their loved one just passed away. Another nurse was talking a depressed patient out of killing themselves. Another nurse was getting verbally berated by a doctor because an order was carried out incorrectly. I sincerely hope that after a bit of time, you will offer a sincere apology to all of us nurses who are proud to do what they do every day.

To the other nurses that may be reading this, THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO. We are in a truly blessed and special field, and we are CHANGING LIVES!!!!!

This is all I have to say about the matter. I hope my words and thoughts have shed some light based on your already calculated opinions about us nurses. Today was my day off, but as "just a nurse," there's no such thing. I'm truly never off duty.
