...and all I got was a lousy pair of socks!!!!
It's Friday. I am off work (finally) after working a double; my usual shift Thursday and an all nighter last night. I'm pretty stupid tired right now, but I had to get all of this down. The second snowpocalypse of 2015 came a-tumblin down Wednesday afternoon WHILE I was working, and brought all the snow, ice and everything NOT nice you could ever dream of. That, my friends, is where this very long (and albeit amusing story) begins.
Wednesday night, around 6ish in the evening, the deluge that had been occurring all day turned into sleet up in dear ol' Lexington. I called my sister when I was on break and was like yeah it's getting pretty bad out. By the time it was time for me to go home, I couldn't. A, the roads were a hot mess, and B, my car was stuck. In the work parking lot. So a friend whom I befriended after working on the older folks unit offered to let me stay at her place, as she only lived one street up from work. So that was that. Luckily, sis is nice and awesome and ABSOLUTELY INSISTED I pack a bag of clothes on the off chance I got stranded. I absolutely insisted myself to pack 2 days worth just in case the weather decided to misbehave on Thursday.
It did.
Woke up Thursday, got a shower, chilled out, dug my friend's car out of the OVER A FOOT of snow that had fallen. My poor boots didn't stand a chance, and I was honestly not prepared for what had come. They're those fake Uggs, so yeah. Not good lotsa snow and wet weather footwear. So anyway, we dig her car out, get out of her driveway, and the car gets stuck. After piddlin around for about 10 minutes, come to find out there's a sheet of ICE underneath the stupid snow. So instead of trying to dig ourselves out, I get into the backseat of her car where my spare clothes out, take out my wallet and car keys, and we walk. To work.
Yup. We WALKED. On one of the normally craziest roads in Lexington. They hadn't cleared the sidewalks yet, so we were walking on the road. I was calling my sister as we were gallivanting.. Luckily it was only a 15 minute ish walk, but by the time I got to work my boots were soaked. I had a spare of shoes, but they were locked up...in my spare clothes...which were stuck in my friend's car. Ran into the CEO when I walked onto my unit; said it was ok if I wore a pair of hospital socks until my boots dried. Boots didn't dry till near the end of my shift, so I spent most of yesterday 2nd shift...in socks. But wait, that's not all! There's more. About 9:00 last night, supervisor comes to the unit and says one of the 3rd shift nurses called in; couldn't get out. Asked if I would work a double, since it looked like I was going to be stuck again for another night. Walked out to the parking lot on my break and almost spilled myself all over it about half a dozen times. Reluctantly I agreed, and as a result I'm off until Sunday!!!! So anyway I finish up my 2nd shift, which turned out to be a really great night, and shuffle on off to hang out with the older folks all night. Also, a good night, filled with good food, laughter, some questionable pranks ("urine" in a specimen cup, which turned out to be lemonade that a night nurse drank and about gave the supervisor a coronary), and sharing stories of unit 1 nighttmares.
Give report to day shift, crash on overflow unit for about an hour and a half. Leave work about 9:00 this morning, spend 20 minutes digging my car out of the foot high snow drift on and around it, with ice underneath it, and still almost end up getting stuck. Fortunately one of the social work interns who works on my unit pulled in, had a shovel in his car and helped dig me out (thanks Tim!!!!) Get home after taking about 50 minutes (interstate was a hot mess at times and all roads leading to my house were a hot mess too). And now I'm home!!! Had a nice hot shower, a cup of coffee and man it is so good to be back home! Looking forward to doing absolutely NOTHING all day. The video below is probably the funniest thing ever right now, since I've been awake about....oh, 20 hours and counting. Going to definitely nap later!!! Yeehaw!!!! Can't wait for spring!
By the way, I kept the socks :)
