A welcoming change

Today I covered on day shift on what will eventually be my home unit...sooner rather than later. As of yesterday morning, my replacement has been hired and will begin orientation at the end of the month! I'm super ready and excited to begin this new change. When I came into work this morning I was a bit nervous; some of the staff I have worked with previously, some I have not. I was a bit apprehensive about working with new people and how they would treat me as the newbie. It was a no-stress day (seriously, NO stress!!!) and I get along well with everyone...so far! :) The main doctor for the unit came early in the morning and while doing a few discharges was like "come here and I'll show you what we do here." Like...actually WALKED me through it. I knew already what to do for the most part, but it was...humbling to say the least. There's a reputation that doctors treat the nurses like crap, but not here. Not in this case! Not even an hour into my shift and I already felt like I belonged. We all ended up discussing our love for baked goods, and now I'm promising everyone baked goods from my dear sister (who loves to bake while I on the other hand freaking despise it).

Apparently, as I heard several times today, I'm a "welcoming change." Though I don't mean ill will towards anyone, let's just say it was nice to hear comments like that. Then came the laughing, joking and cutting up. By the end of the day, I was actually kind of bored; we had all gotten our work done and nothing else came up or needed done. I never once felt worried or was constantly wondering what else needed to be done; everything got done and I knew it would have gotten done. It felt so refreshing to not be sweeping under what my co-workers have done, or to go to extreme lengths to just get everything done for the sake of getting things done...like I've had to do many times on many units. Not to mention getting things done in a timely fashion; we were done with the bulk of our work by noon. I left today feeling good about what I got done and not stressing about what I didn't or couldn't finish. Before I clocked out I ran into a co worker and he was like "hey. It was great working with you." Boom. Out of the blue. Totally not expecting it at all. And it was nice. Really nice. I have a couple more weeks until I officially start, but as far as I'm concerned I already have.

They said that I'm the welcoming change that's coming, but I think that I'm more welcome to the change of just something new and different. I could get used to this.

Treated myself to a bit of Coke Zero. With a yellow bendy straw! Cheers to new beginnings!
