The Accident

Over the weekend, my parents came and visited! This is a rarity for us, since both of us work and don't have time to visit as often as we would like. Anywho, they left yesterday morning and it was a fun weekend. They got here on Friday, and that's when the excitement began.

On the way home from dinner Friday night, I was driving every one home. It was raining...about 8:30 in the evening. There was a car in front a little bit ahead of us who was turning into an empty parking lot. A little bit ahead, another car in the opposite direction was coming towards it and I knew. I knew it wasn't going to end well. About a second later, boom. The two cars hit, nose to nose. At that instant, I just pulled into an adjacent parking lot without even thinking. I ran out of my car, and my dad had to tell me to turn my car off. I told my sister to call 911 and I ran across the street, stepping in a large puddle along the way. At that time, another car stopped and asked if I called 911, which I said my sister was. I saw the driver of the car facing us (which I will call X) get out of his car, so I went to the driver of the car facing the opposite direction (Car Y). There were two passengers; a woman was driving. She looked  pretty upset. I asked her her name and she told me, then proceeding to tell me her "effing chest hurt and I need an ambulance." I then told her I was a nurse, and for an instant I saw her relax...just for a second. I said I didn't think anything was broken but the airbags in their car did deploy...and again, I'm not a doctor. (She was moving around ok). The other samaritans checked out the scene while my dad was directing traffic. Then the driver of car X was like "why didn't you have your lights on?!" to passenger of car Y. My dad almost had to break up a fight between the two of them. Meanwhile, my mom and sister were talking to the other drivers who stopped and waiting for the police or whoever to show up.

A few minutes later (according to my sister, it took 4 minutes) the police showed up, along with a fire and rescue squad. The police officer showed up and he asked if anyone was hurt. I pointed to the driver of car X and then proceeded to check on the passenger of car X, who was outside smoking a cig (awwwwwwwwwwesome). He had a big cut on his right hand; nothing serious though. Around that time a few fire rescue crew showed up. The other samaritans looked at me and asked "can we go now?" Not really knowing what to say, I said sure. My dad talked to the police officer for a minute and then I told my family we could go. And that was it. I don't know what happened; I never saw a accident  report in the newspaper or anything like that. I think everyone was going to be ok.  It just goes to show you though, that someone in my line of work, no matter where they work, are never really off duty. Sure I have days off, but still. I am constantly in the mindset that anything could happen where I am needed. And that night, I was needed for such a time as that. I was surprised at how calm I was; my hands were shaking for the entire drive home though. Adrenaline rush. Scary but it could have been a lot worse.
