"Blossom," 3 day weekend, information overload and BERNIE!!!!

This past weekend, ALL weekend, I was on site. It was a bit hectic at times, but I really did enjoy having a lot to do in the 3 days I was there. And I'm back tomorrow and Thursday, even though I'm on Spring Break right now! Friday was a good day, relatively fast and not too much really happened. ALMOST got to see a code! Where I am each unit is on "Code call" which means that for a few months each unit rotates of. So where I am is on it for a while. Anyway, the call came in through the intercom, so my preceptor and I went up to the 4th floor where it was happening. I asked what room we were going to and my preceptor said "just look for the crowd." Sure enough we got there and there was a crowd. There were like 25523452346 people in a room the size of my apartment living room and it was NUTS! But nobody knew the patient's code status, so someone had to run back out, get her chart and look. Meanwhile somebody was doing CPR until they came back and said she was a DNR. Then it stopped just like that. My preceptor said that is something that should always been known and passed on in report. So in the times I've given report I always make sure to mention that...you never know what may happen.

Saturday was probably the best day out of the weekend! I had the opportunity to talk to a patient and his family for some of the day, and that was always really nice. They were really sweet people. :] Then ANOTHER code got called in near the end of the day, so my preceptor and I went to it again. And it was an actual code this time!! Again, we went up and looked for the crowd. There weren't as many people in the room, probably about 10. I made myself useful by being a CPR stand-in. Just when I was about ready to jump in, they brought the patient back. We all got to go and get him transferred to a different unit; all of this took about 30 minutes. Once the patient got transferred we left and went back to our patients. Anyway, we got back and one of my patient's family were talking about...UK or something, I don't even remember. But my patient said something along the lines of asking "Blossom" a question (Blossom AKA me). So for the rest of the time the family was there I was known as Blossom. I'm still not even sure how I got that nickname...but he ended up being transferred to the floor that night.

Onto Sunday. We ended up having a new admit who got admitted around 4ish that morning. She was a really sweet lady with a very nice husband too. I also had the same patient who I had had the entire weekend. Anyway, I would go in and do what I needed to do and ended up being in there a bit longer because we would just get around to talking and whatnot. Then around 4:30 that evening was when things got a bit interesting. I had just finished up my assessments when I couldn't find my preceptor anywhere. I sat down and started charting when I thought I heard someone screaming. I figured it was just coming from the hallway so I just kept on doing what I was doing. Then I heard it again, and it sounded like it was much closer. Turns out it was another patient on the unit who was very confused, agitated and yelling for someone named Bernie. Once the shouting began I went in and checked on my patients to make sure they were ok. One was sleeping and my other was just wondering what was going on. I told her I didn't know, which I really didn't. Eventually this patient did calm down and copious phone calls to the physician were made as to what to do about this patient. I don't know what happened to her, but I hope she was ok. Overall it was a very busy weekend. I've enjoyed the last few days off but I'm ready to be done. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed where I am and what I've done. It's just the sooner I get done the sooner I can graduate. The jury's still out as to whether or not I feel ready, but every day I feel a bit more ready. I'm still not quite where I want to be, but I'll get there. I still have a lot to learn, but I'm keeping a wide open mind. And I've applied to a couple jobs already!!! I've already received a rejection email, but that's ok. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger! And I am stronger, and better. All good things will come in due time.
