Do you need a minute?

Three cheers for reading period!!! Yep. That's this week. This week was definitely an interesting one, that's for sure. A pretty one too for lack of a better word. Thursday instead of being in McKee we spent most the day in Annville, about 10 mins. away from McKee. Still in Jackson County. GORGEOUS city! (Next week is the health fair and I'll take my camera!!!!!!!) Our task was to distribute fliers in various parts of the area and familiarize ourselves with the area and get to know some of the common folk. Well, that was met and then some. We started out in the outskirts of the town becoming familiar with the nursing home. For being a small town it was a pretty nice nursing home; clean, friendly staff and the residents looked happy for the most part. I'm not trying to diss small towns since I come from a smallish hometown...but anyway. Our constant wandering led us to a very nice man who was happy to show us around and showed us an old church, Christian academy and a campground. Just a sidenote, the weather was also fantastic that day! The sun was out, a nice breeze and the mid 60's by the time we were heading home. Anyway, so our day ended up being a tour for the majority of it, but my goodness it was lovely. Quite lovely. Looking forward to going back later this week. In fact, since it's reading period I don't have any Saturday clinicals. :]

Now onto yesterday. I was in the nursery, which I LOVED! More than I thought I would actually...to the point of maybe turning it into a backup plan if mental health falls off the wayside. But we'll see. Anywho, the nursery started out with 6 babies, then 4, then 2, then only 1 for a little while, then back up to 7 when the pediatrician and neonatologist did their rounds. I was a temporary baby snatcher...no worries. Just had to retrieve them from their respective rooms, take them to the nursery, doctor does their business, then took them back. No babies were harmed in the making. I also got to see two circumcisions, and let me tell you it's a good thing they do something now for relief. It blows me away that doctors used to just...do them. Ouch. Again, no babies were harmed; one little guy slept all the way through it, and also left us a nice mess to clean up afterwards. Ah, out of the...oh nevermind.

I also got to change a baby, which was nice since it had been quite a few years ago since I had done that. He also left me a nice surprise...and another....and another...and another. I stopped and let him finish before I finished. Sure babies don't talk back to you, but I believe they "talk back" non verbally in many other ways to make up for the lack of words. But it was all good in fun in the name of being in nursing school and learning. Sometimes I caught myself just watching them when there was nothing going on. You almost can't help but wonder what they're thinking or feeling. What could possibly be going on in their little heads at such a young age? Oh goodness me I could go on and on...but I feel that I should close by saying that I will be enjoying next Saturday off to have some nice bonding time with friends/faculty and good food. The week after that will be AMAZING!!!!!!!! Stay tuned for that. ^_^

  1. I am so jealous of the nursery part. :-p If I were a nurse, I wouldn't be able to stay away from working in maternity wards... I'm actually pretty excited because I discovered there's a midwifery clinic in the tiny little town I moved to, and they're always asking for volunteers. So I got in touch with them and I'm supposed to go in and speak with them soon. I'm pretty stoked to be doing something that I love and that has something to do with my degree, even if it's just volunteer work. :-D
