Shame to the slacker!!!

AKA, me. I am the slacker. Not for my schoolwork, but in just keeping up with THIS, which is getting increasingly more difficult. Anyway, this week was another week of firsts. Last Thursday, I had two patients that I was taking care of, which I am actually starting to enjoy. Anyway, I walked into my first patient's room and she was very sweet. After I finished my assessment I told her I would come back around 9:00 to give her her morning meds. I went onto my second patient's room where she appeared to be asleep. Because I had to change patient assignments, I missed report on both of my patients. However, my nurse was nice enough to give me a very brief report on this particular patient. I walked in and repeated her name, but nothing happened. Assuming she just didn't hear me, I repeated her name a little louder. Again, nothing happened. Feeling myself get a little worried, I checked the monitors, but everything was fine. She wasn't dead. I quickly left the room to get my instructor, sounding calm while inside of me was screaming. I then found my nurse along the way and we all rushed into the room. Checked BP, glucose and anything else we could think of, but everything checked out ok.

About 10 minutes later, she came to. She was still somewhat disorientated, but it was better than before. Anyway, I was actually surprised at myself for how I reacted. I was certain I was going to flip out because it was my first unresponsive patient. I ended up not getting to my other patient until after 9:00, but luckily she was very understanding. So once all that was over, then they day went by pretty quickly. The way I see it is I could have reacted in two different ways; I could have gone to pieces or I could have just done what I knew what to do. So I did.

This past week I also started evening rotations. I am sad to say we are only there two more times due to Twitter Friday this week and Good Friday next week, but I will make the best of it. My sister asked me if I liked evening or morning clinicals better. I told her I would let her know after Friday night. The answer? I really do like evenings. We got free food!!! Well hey, they were just going to throw it away! ANYWAY....getting way off topic here. But it was fun to see the adorable kids and help take care of them. There were only 3 of us students on the floor so we had the opportunity to help the tech with vital signs. I got to do vitals on a 3 WEEK OLD!!! ^__^ I thought it would be easy, but....it wasn't. You try to stick a blood pressure cuff the size of a bracelet on a wiggly baby, then we'll have a nice chat. Hahaha. But it was just super awesome and that's all I have to say about that.

With the end of the semester approaching, I am happy to say that I am soon getting to the point of my last year of nursing school! Man it has been awesome but I am SO READY to be done!!! However, I just keep telling myself that all this work, stress, clinicals, tests, homework, stress, early mornings, stress and STRESS will be worth it in the long run!
