6 down, but still counting
The end of the semester is almost here. Just have three finals to overcome and I will only have three semesters left of nursing school! The real world is getting closer and closer, it's both exciting and terrifying at the same time! Anyway, I'll just jump right in. Tuesday was....long. Very long. Me and a friend of mine were in the OR watching a seemingly routine operation. What was supposed to take only a little over an hour ended up taking 2 hours and 35 minutes!!! Like I said, just a routine operation. I won't go into detail as to what the procedure was over, but...it was long. However, the doctor we were with was AWESOME. Number 1: he loves students!!! Yay! He would ask us questions about the procedure, why it was being done and the anatomy. We were able to answer all his questions...CHECK. Go Berea nursing students!!
At the end of each clinical, me and my group always have a discussion about our day and what we got to do. One of my classmates mentioned a rather tough subject; she saw a young patient with a chronic illness that in most cases is easily prevented. His parents are, in my opinion, the primary cause for this illness. But....they won't do anything about it. They won't change their ways, even if it means for the well-being of their young child. We then had a discussion later on...child protective services will take children away if they are obese. They, nowadays, consider that "child abuse." But, what we as novice nursing students don't understand is WHY....do they not consider this situation abuse? It makes me physically sick to my stomach. My wish is that these parents will realize the error of their ways and take the necessary steps to not only getting themselves better but their young child of well.
Now onto today. I have concluded both my Med/Surg and Psychiatric rotations this week. Today was just an all around good day. I left at the end of the day doing nothing skills-wise but felt like I accomplished so much. What did I do? I talked to patients, made holiday crafts with the patients and my fellow classmates and....got attacked by yellow paint. It's ok; it was just an accident, but all is well. Nursing shirts can be replaced :] Needless to say, I did not get the worst of the yellow paint attack, but like I said, white nursing shirts can be replaced. The patients were all concerned and were wondering if we were ok. Good times, and a Merry Christmas to all!
When I walked into my psych rotations, I didn't know what to expect. I had no clear-cut idea of what mental illness looked like or what it sounded like. All I had were lots of negative stigmas and biased knowledge from other people and the typical labels of "crazy" and "insane people." It's amazing to me what a semester of exposure can do to your mindset and mentality. It was definitely scary at first, because I had absolutely no idea what to expect. But now...it's all the more reason I want to pursue the field even more! Think about it; the US has sent satellites to Mars and even Pluto, scientists have discovered cures for the most complex diseases, but....nobody knows what causes someone to be schizophrenic. Granted, there are theories, but not a concrete cause. Fascinating, yet mysterious at the same time. Wow. Overall, I am glad this semester is over, because frankly, it's been rough! Coming up next semester, pediatrics and Med/Surg continued. The adventures continue.
