Oh my goodness...stupid stupid me!

I'VE BEEN SO BUSY!!!! Last week was totally crazy, and I just now realized I didn't even BLOG!!!! Man I cannot wait for this semester to be OVER WITH!!! Ok, enough about that. Let me give you all a very very very quick recap of what happened last week in Berea and in Lexington.

Last Tuesday, I was in the ED. It was awesome! I really thought that I would hate it, but I was surprised at how much I really enjoyed it. The day included a child with a...stomach bug? I'm not sure, but a tablet of Zofran did the trick! He was seriously the most adorable little boy ever! Anyway, then...there were a few "drug seekers" as we call them, an odd...character who was interested in talking to himself (or reading to himself?) and playing video games and Humans vs. Zombies. Like I said...an odd character. Yeah, ok, enough about that. Passed a lot of meds and did a bunch of vital signs!!!! But I will have the opportunity to go back at the end of my rotation in Berea...yay!

This Tuesday, I returned to the ICU for a second time. Wow. What a crazy yet somewhat sad story. Probably the saddest situation I've seen; and I thought that the old people in the nursing home were sad. I'm going to try and make a VERY long story short; she was an elderly lady who needed a major surgery done in order to save her life. When she was first given this diagnosis, she said no and that she wanted to die. She was moved to hospice where she remained for four days, praying fervently that "Jesus just take me away." After four days, I suppose she got a sign from God saying she wasn't supposed to die, so she changed her mind and went forward with the surgery. Yeah, I know. What a mess. Her POA busted the poor anesthesiologist's chops with so many questions, and insisted her family come back to see her before they took her away. Her...WHOLE FAMILY....consisting of 15-20 people. -_______-  She was taken to the OR early in the morning, and unfortunately I do not know of the current status of this lady. I prayed constantly for the rest of the day that she made it through.

Now onto last Thursday. I wasn't at Bluegrass as I was this week. Me and one other fellow student ventured through downtown Lexington to an outpatient sort of place. It was an outpatient program for those with mental illnesses just leaving from long-term care or from a state hospital. As someone in my group mentioned, it was like "adult day care for the mentally ill." Seriously, they come and go a few times a week for about 5 hours/visit. I talked to one lady pretty much the entire time I was there...man, she loved to talk. And talk. And talk. We then proceeded to play Wii Fit as part of their "exercise hour." That was fun...and I had so much fun looking like a complete idiot of myself. I want to go back. Badly.

Today was...interesting. Met some interesting residents (I was back at Bluegrass today). One of the residents had a very...colorful history. I won't reveal any of the details, but it is a sad situation; this individual knows nothing about how to live in society. And it's sad, because his bad choices have now had negative consequences down the road. There was another resident who liked to pace and clean, everything (the residents do room care on Thursdays). He cleaned the light fixture in the linen closet, the walls on the linen closet, and all the tables, all with a wad of paper towels and a bottle of Windex...all after he finished cleaning his own room. Then, one of the resident's mom came in with her two little dogs and started chatting with me. She was nice, but like the guy in the ED...an odd character. She was still fun to talk with nonetheless.

I will only be reporting of one day next week, granted I remember to actually blog next week. No Thursday clinicals; I'm off for Thanksgiving break!!!! Thanks for reading whoever reads this. Cheers!
