4 Down!!!

Yes, readers, you heard me correctly; I have as of this week completed 4 nursing school rotations! 2 last semester, and two thus far in this semester. It's exciting, yet terrifying at the same time; it's hard to believe how fast they have gone! But, my 4AM rising times are OVER for the rest of this semester...at least. Who knows whether or not they will return...my money is yes. Anyway, let's start with Tuesday.

I was in the OR again. Saw the same thing as the first time I was in the OR six (or is it 7?) weeks ago. Garsh, I don't even remember. Anyway, the patient I was with for the entire day I am serious was a Godsend! She was the most sweetest lady I had the fortune of spending most of the day with! For the pre-op portion of the day, when tests and whatnot weren't going on, we were just talking about...everything. Our families, jobs, my schooling, needles and blood tests, whatever was on our minds! Intra-op, not much conversing going on...obviously. The surgery was pretty stinking cool though, even though I had seen it before. I hate to disappoint my advisor in the fact that I have STILL not seen a lap. chole (ok, ok, laparascopic cholecystectomy....gallbladder!!). Sometimes I get on medical term tangents that I forget 100% of my readers are not in the same boat as me. My apologies :]

Post-op, this lady's sweetness really shone. I guess sometimes anesthesia can bring out the best in people in some cases...sure as heck not what is seen portrayed in the media and such. I'm sure for those of you who have been under the influence of anesthesia, sometimes it can make one very uncomfortable. I can speak on behalf of these discomforts; I had the shakes so badly and I kept telling my mom the wonders of novacaine (had my wisdom teeth out last May. Lucky me). Anyway, I asked her if she wanted some ice or something, and she said very quietly..."just a little bit. I don't want to keep bothering you." I just smiled and said that she wasn't a bother at all. I wish all my patients had been as grateful as she was...my goodness. Such a wonderful way to end a rotation that I was not particularly fond of. But...tis dead and buried, and I can look forward to 2 extra hours of sleep on Tuesdays.

Onto Thursday, my last day of my psych rotation. I was away from my unit that I have been assigned to and was placed on the general adult unit. These folks are admitted for mostly mood disorders, such as bipolar, depression or schizophrenia. Anyway, the census (number of patients) was remarkably high according to one of the nurses I was talking to; 24 admitted. The first part of the morning started out rather slowly; the patients were all at breakfast and I was dancing in the nurse's station with one of the Mental Health Technicians (MHT for short). Good times, if I do say so myself. Turned out we had a lot of similar music likes, SCORE! Anyway, then things got a little...loud. To make a long story short, one patient had a wee bit of a mouth problem...in terms of a lot of yelling and liking to run it. But the problem was solved...I guess; she eventually left the facility AMA...or against medical advice for my non-acronym followers. But what really impressed me was one group session that went on...the rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) session. The MHT, sorry, there are a lot of acronyms in the mental health world, was just incredible with the patients. You knew he was good when I felt myself getting a little teary eyed with some of the patients. And that was it; we bid our goodbyes and now my time there is through.

The plan is hopefully when I reach my capstone nursing clinicals (in....a year and a half) I will return there for a repeat clinical, with longer days and more responsibilities. Coming up this week; two new rotations! My Tuesday is a lot closer to home...literally a 30-second walk away from my dorm, which makes this girl happy. Thursdays comes to a facility on the campus of Eastern State Hospital, an old mental institution. We'll see how these go! Stay tuned for more exciting adventures as I spiral further and further down my nursing career!
